We've been discussing the importance of storytelling in our course, whether it be through visual design or actual technical writing. Admittedly, I did not understand the keen emphasis on this topic: it hardly seemed relevant to the task of technical writing. Ever since learning about the field, I thought it would center around manuals, drafting, and the construction of other dry learning material. So perhaps you'll understand my wariness of storytelling in a field focusing on conveying instructional details.
But as we continue with our signage project, I'm starting to recognize storytelling in visual design. Arranging objects and pairing colors evokes different ideas and moods, either welcoming or warning a viewer. Of course, maybe storytelling is a romanticist way of tackling something as dry as technical writing. But romantic and informative are not mutually-exclusive: rather, storytelling is a way to imbue both characteristics and intelligent design to make something as mundane as ordinary life a little more interesting.
